Strategic Misalignment

An AI agenda can receive considerable funding without a shared executive commitment to what it should accomplish. Different functions pursue different priorities, the board has no settled view, and the CEO's involvement is limited to endorsement. Difficult trade-offs remain unresolved because no one below the executive team can settle them.
The diagnostic highlights weak personal CEO sponsorship alongside a lack of formal board engagement. These are signals about the authority behind the agenda. They do not mean that the CEO should select models or supervise every pilot. They invite a more practical question: when AI requires a change to funding, responsibilities, or priorities across functions, who can make that decision and sustain it?
Within 60 days, convene a board-level discussion focused on the business choices. Agree where AI matters strategically, what outcomes justify investment, and what commitments the organization is prepared to make. Appoint a C-suite champion with explicit authority and give the CEO a recurring role in reviewing outcomes and clearing obstacles. Test the resulting alignment by asking executives independently to name the priority use cases, their intended outcomes, and the accountable owners. Materially different answers are evidence that the discussion has not yet translated into shared direction.
